yet another TT AWD car born again from parts that would have otherwise been sent to the crusher. most have seen my detailed threads on the AWD conversion process: so there is no point in showing the same repetitive pics over and over. this thread just shares some pics of making Kyle's (Kadams2822) 1999 base into an AWD TT car. lets begin by paying respects to Curt & Libby's (Firestorm91tt & SandstoneVR4) old 1993 Sandstone VR-4: |

because this was a "extract from donor car, install in 1999", while keeping all costs as low as possible. i should have known better and advised Kyle the engine needed a tear down due to it's weathered appearance. despite the timing marks all lining up and the belt being in good condition, while rotating the engine with a breaker bar, it required less effort than usual with other engines. after a quick install to the 99 and a basic hook up to get the engine running, sure enough the starter turns the engine over effortless as if it had no load on it. there was no compression ![]() at the date of this posting, i still have not teared down the engine yet, but my guess is stuck valves, as i did not hear any clanging or horrible sounds associated with bent valves. due to the possibility that the engine could present some very time consuming/expensive repairs. instead of putting his original 99 SOHC engine back in, and sending him back SOHC AWD, Kyle opted to buy a cheap 92 engine i already had here in the shop with a blown rear turbo. i pulled the engine again, and i swapped the turbos from the bad engine over to the 92 engine, and dropped it in. |

the drama under the hood comes to an end (until we install the FMIC at least). it was refreshing to flip the car around and have a change of scenery for the AWD swap! i'm glad to say this part of the job went smoothly, except for some delays, and mistakes on my machinists part! the fourth pic in shows a mouse nest that would have never seen the light of day if it weren't for doing an AWD conversion. |

it's hard to believe that this swap entire swap process took almost 2 months to complete (not including the tear down of the donor VR-4) due to the donor cars engine bay being exposed to the open elements for 4 years, and ruining many important parts (if not from the accident itself). this project had quite few spirit killing moments for me, and some unexpected blows to Kyle's wallet. but despite everything we went through, it's always worth it at the end of the day, when you give our platform back another AWD car, that would have otherwise been lost forever. |
